Gojirathon 6: Kaijû daisensô (1965)

G: minus 32 days

Gojirathon is me just writing up some thoughts about the movies I see while I conduct my little marathon of Godzilla-movies in anticipation of the new Hollywood retooling. Why Gojirathon and not Godzillathon? Well, because Rolfe already did his Godzillathon as part of his Monster Madness, and I don’t want to steal his work. I’ll be using the terms, G, Big G, Godzilla and Gojira somewhat interchangeably… since I can be a bit lazy at times, when it comes to these things.

Invasion of Astro-Monster (1965)

Ahhh, back on track now at least. The I never realized that they were making these films so often that they even had the same release-year.  Anyways…

What we got here is basically an excuse to get a Godzilla IN SPACE-scenario. While exploring the newly found dark planet X (slightly beyond Jupiter), some earthlings make contact with aliens (clearly the inspiration for the Xilians of 2004’s Final Wars). These slightly detached beings promise the cure for cancer for the price of loaning the might of Godzilla and Rodan to fight off Monster Zero that has been plagueing the X-dwellers ever since the last movie. The earthlings see no reason why this could backfire so the monsters are brought up without earthly resistance and fight off Ghidorah (the X-people just call everything by numbers, and Monster Zero was actually King Ghidorah) . All is fine and good even the…

Surprise, surprise!!! Nnnope, the aliens had it all planned out and now they are using mind-control to attack Earth with all three monsters. So the humans scramble up a defence of technobabble and strange sounds to ward off the aliens who declare that they will return in the future to wreak their revenge.

As Godzilla-films go, it’s kindof run of the mill. They are getting good at some things, like the outlandish plots, but in other aspects it’s kind of going a bit lazy when you clearly see the contraptions moving the miniature vehicles along and the wires holding the monsters up. But still, could be worse… one could always remember what happened in the ninetees. Oh well, let’s see how they follow things up in the next one, where Godzilla fights… Ebirah, Horror of the Deep!!!

By the way… I wonder if these people are the same that came to earth 5000 years ago according to the last movie?

Be Seeing You!

Oh, and yes.. apparently, this is the film that the Godzilla-Happy Dance comes from. Who knew?  😛
